The life cycle of a varied carpet beetle from egg to adult can range between 249-354 days. Their primary food sources include woolen fabrics, carpets, furs, hides, feathers, hair, silk, bones, and dead insects.
Adults will emerge in spring or early summer near indoor windows. They feed on nectar and plants that produce abundant pollen such as spiraea and buckwheat.

Found throughout US, varied carpet beetles are found in dark secluded places such as homes in attics, under beds, in Oriental carpets, tapestries and wood-based wall-to-wall carpeting.
