Sowbugs are nocturnal and crawl about sidewalks, patios, and foundations. In the daytime, they take shelter under stones, flower pots, boards, compost, or anything resting on moist soil. They can enter crawl spaces, basements, or ground floor structures through door thresholds, expansion joints, and voids in block walls. They are known for their ability to roll into a ball.
They are scavengers that feed mainly on decaying organic matter. Sowbugs thrive in damp environments such as decaying vegetables and mulch and can find themselves into potted plants. When they are indoors, is usually are indications that there is a heavy infestation outdoors or they are breeding on the outside close to the foundation.
Sowbugs are mainly a nuisance pest, although they sometimes will enter a structure in large numbers, they do not bite or sting. They also will not infest food, clothing or wood. Sowbugs do not cause physical damage or transmit diseases.
