Acrobat ants typically feed on insects, sweets, and high protein foods. They produce swarming ants that swarm from mid-June to late September. They leave the nest to mate with females and start their own colonies. Some species of acrobat ants may bite or emit an unpleasant odor when disturbed. They enter structures on wires, utility lines, and plumbing. They can wander up to 100 feet from their nests for food and water. Acrobat ants like to build nests in wood siding of homes.

Habitat

In the outdoors, acrobat ants usually nest in trees, under rocks or in logs, and in firewood. They create tunnels in decayed wood or build nests in tunnels carved out by other insects.
They can find their way inside homes by trailing wires, plumbing, tree limbs, window frames, door thresholds, and other vulnerable spots. Once inside, they will nest in wall voids or wood that is subject to high moisture and fungal decay. They nest in wood previously damaged by other wood-boring insects. Acrobat ants are also drawn to Styrofoam insulation behind wood siding.

Threats

Acrobat ants may bite when threatened and some species of this ant may emit an unpleasant odor when disturbed. These bites can cause minor pain, itching, redness, and swelling. Home remedies are frequently all that is necessary for symptom relief. Acrobat ants can also pose a risk to structures. They have been known to strip the insulation from electrical or telephone wires, which can cause short circuits.
