Drywood Termites and other wood-destroying pests like Powder Post Beetles can infest furniture. In addition to wood-destroying insects, bed bugs, spiders, and clothing moths might get comfortable on or inside of your furniture. Once an infestation begins, insects and other pests make themselves right at home, and nothing is off-limits.
What is Fumigation?
Fumigation is a type of treatment where gas is introduced into a target area and remains for a time period to kill insects. After the gas is absorbed and retained for the recommended time, it is allowed to evaporate. Afterward, no residual chemicals are left behind. Fumigation isn’t just for buildings! While structural fumigation is the most well-known, there are other types of fumigation. Fumigation is exceptionally effective, and treatment is available for smaller target areas. Please note that the gases used during fumigation are very hazardous. Only a professional exterminator should complete this process.
Signs of Infested Furniture
Bed bugs, clothing moths, drywood termites, and powder post beetles are known to infest furniture. Keep reading to learn how to spot signs of a furniture infestation by one of these household pests.
Rugs, carpet, and upholstery made from acetate, acrylic, nylon, polyester, and other synthetics can harbor clothing moths. These moths eat and digest protein fibers found in silk, wool, specialty hair fibers, and synthetic fibers. If you have an infestation, you might notice flying adult moths. While the adults do not cause any harm to your clothing or furniture, their larvae create considerable damage. Loose carpet fibers, fabric damage, and fuzzy cocoons the same color as the textile also indicate an infestation.
Drywood Termites prefer dry wood that is not decayed. Since these termites don’t require extra moisture to survive, indoor furniture provides the perfect environment for drywood termites to live and thrive. The most common sign of furniture infested with termites is a pile of fecal pellets or droppings, usually the same color as the wood. If you see a pile of fine powder on or near your wooden furniture, it could be termite feces. Small holes or galleries within furniture are also tell-tale signs of a termite infestation.
Powder Post Beetles
Powder post beetles are tiny, flattened, and reddish-brown to black. Their larvae create tunnels in wood, and when they become adults, they bore out through the wood, usually bringing fine and powdery dust with them. Old wood antiques are a common target for powder post beetles, along with hardwood floors and other hardwood products. If left untreated, they reduce wood to a fine powder, hence their name. A sign of powder post beetles are piles of dust near small holes in wooden furniture.
Bed bugs can start as a few intruders that will quickly spread and become a more extensive infestation. Bed bugs don’t only target mattresses, and they can infest other furniture such as couches or chairs. Here are a few ways to identify a bed bug infestation within your furniture:
- Blood spots that appear from squished bed bugs
- Tiny black or brown droppings that become smeared when smushed
- Sticky white eggs
- Musty furniture or mattress odor
- Small, red, itchy bites that usually surface in a line. Bed bug bites may also resemble a rash.
